Kendall Faulkner Art - Original Paintings & Commissions
Kendall Faulkner is an emerging artist from Pasadena, California. She has been an academic librarian for nearly 10 years and brings both a passion for research and themes of information structures into her art. Much of her current work utilizes reclaimed library books as the support rather than canvas. Her work considers the ephemeral nature of knowledge and technology as well as the nostalgia of books and the pain of seeing books that are removed from libraries for the wrong reasons.
The books I use in my paintings have been removed from the library’s collection (“deselected”) and are headed to the dumpster. I start with acrylic studies on paper to see the interplay of the subject and the books, rearranging and swapping out the books many times before coming to a final form. The paintings are of women whose facial expressions or body language imply anxiety and other difficult emotions. I position the figures not as traditional portraits, aware of the viewer, but in the style of Edward Hopper, as though we are looking in on them.
In addition to images of women, some pieces focus on objects related to technology and the cycle of information/knowledge. The figures and objects are rendered realistically, with soft focus and thin application of paint. The interplay of the materiality of the books and the emotions brought up by the images is where the viewer can derive meaning. I hope that the viewer thinks about their relationship to information and the demands of living in the information age. - Kendall Faulkner
